Mark Rothko

* 1903
✝ 1970

American painter of Russian Jewish descent, born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz. The experience of fleeing Russia and the radical workers' environment he grew up in both served as perfect predispositions for him to become a progressive artist. Inspired by (German) expressionists and surrealist painters, he started painting his early works during the 1920s.

His style continuously developed into abstract expressionism (although he denied any association with this movement). He is mostly famous for 'multiforms' - his signature style of large-scale simplistic designs of rectangles or bars of various colours on highly saturated backgrounds.
